Erskine Preston Caldwell (1903 – 1987) was an American novelist and short story writer. His writings about poverty, racism and social problems in his native Southern United States, particularly in his novels 'Tobacco Road' (1932) and 'God's Little Acre' (1933) brought him critical acclaim. 'Kneel to the Rising Sun,' first published in the US in 1935, is a collection of short stories. The seventeen stories, only a few pages each, all deal with various tragedies occurring in the early twentieth century American South, mostly due to poverty and racism.
