Russell Banks (1940-2023) was an internationally acclaimed American writer of fiction and poetry. His novels are known for "detailed accounts of domestic strife and the daily struggles of ordinary often-marginalized characters." He was a member of the International Parliament of Writers and the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Banks authored over twenty works of fiction and non-fiction, including the novels “Continental Drift,” “Rule of the Bone,” “The Book of Jamaica,” “Cloudsplitter,” “Lost Memory of Skin,” and “A Permanent Member of the Family.” His essays and reviews have been published in major magazines, and he has written screenplays and poetry. “Djinn” is a short story taken from Banks’s collection of short stories, “The Angel on the Roof.”.
